A freighter loaded with containers dropped anchor at Qiaotoujiang wharf at Longyou port in Quzhou, Zhejiang province on June 20, marking the launch of the first container route in the port area.
The batch of cargo was transported from Yingkou port in Liaoning city in Shenyang province to Longyou, by way of Zhapu port in the city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.
It took the freighter three days to complete the 340-kilometer journey from Jiaxing to Longyou, shaving off 10 percent of the previous transportation costs, according to senior officials.
Officials said the inland water transport route features many advantages, including low carbon, low costs, as well as high efficiency in loading and unloading.
The new route is expected to attract more businesses for Longyou port area and also extend its container business to more cities in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi and Fujian provinces, according to a staff member from Longyou port area.
Moving forward, the port area will continue launching more inland water routes to boost the development of the container business via sea-inland river transportation.
