Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) is the only multidisciplinary, research-oriented, and open-ended university in China characterized by all-around development of education and research programs in aeronautics, astronautics and marine technology engineering.
Founded in October 1938 in Shaanxi province's Hanzhong city, NWPU settled in Xi'an in 1956. Affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it was one of the first universities in China to enter Project 211 and Project 985, and was included as a national key university with the approval of the State Council in 1960.
NWPU has more than 29,000 students and 4,000 instructors on three campuses – Youyi and Chang'an campuses in Xi’an, and Taicang campus in Jiangsu province, which cover 4.6 square kilometers. The university has 20 specialized schools, plus an international college, an experimental college of education, and the Queen Mary University of London Engineering School of NWPU. It offers 66 undergraduate degree programs, 35 master's degrees in first-tier disciplines, 22 doctoral degrees in first-tier disciplines, and has 17 postdoctoral research stations and seven research institutes in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, Chongqing, Qingdao in Shandong province, Ningbo in Zhejiang province, and Taicang. Four subjects – chemistry, engineering, materials and physics – are listed in the top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global subject ranking.
At NWPU there are 31 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including external employment), 37 winners of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 20 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, eight chief scientists for the National Basic Research Program (Program 973), and four experts with outstanding contributions at the national level.
NWPU has established in-depth partnerships with more than 280 internationally renowned colleges and universities, companies, and scientific research institutions from various countries and regions, including Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Australia, South Korea, the United States and Japan.
The university initiated the Belt and Road Space Innovation Alliance in 2017, and functions as the standing secretariat. Honorary titles, such as honorary professor, have been awarded to 353 internationally renowned experts and scholars, including Nobel laureates. Nine foreign experts have won the China National Friendship Award.
