Wuhan Union Hospital

Wuhan Union Hospital was founded in 1866 and is now a major comprehensive 3A-grade hospital under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Health. Affiliated with Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the hospital comprises several centers such as the first clinical college of Tongji Medical College, emergency center of Hubei province, the telemedicine center of Hubei province, the research center of medical education after graduation of Hubei province.

At present, the hospital consists of four districts: the main district, the tumor center, the west branch and the international hospital, with a total of 5,000 patient beds. The annual patient number of outpatient departments and emergency departments has reached 5.7 million and the annual number of patients discharged has amounted to 227,000.

The hospital has a complete array of academic programs and departments, including 45 clinical and paramedical departments, and 12 research institutes. Among them, 25 are listed as national key clinical specialties, including cardioangiology, cardiovascular surgery, hematology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, orthopedics, thoracic surgery, gynecology, obstetrics and otorhinolaryngology.

The hospital has obvious advantages in personnel, including many distinguished medical specialists. Currently it employs about 7,565 staff members, among whom 564 are medical experts with senior professional titles, including 95 experts who have won special allowances from the State Council.

The hospital is well-equipped and owns plenty of advanced technicians, with more than 100 new techniques applied each year. Supported by research platforms of key laboratories, such as Biological Targeted Therapy and Molecular Imaging Research Institute which are authorized by Hubei province and Ministry of Education, over 400 scientific accomplishments have been achieved since 1979. Among these achievements, four research achievements won the second-class award of National Scientific and Technological Progress, and 30 achievements won the first-class at the provincial and ministerial levels.

The hospital has two primary discipline doctoral programs and three master degree-conferring program of first-level discipline, eight schools and 16 teaching and research departments with 189 supervisors for doctoral programs and 524 for masteral programs.

In recent years, the hospital has devoted great efforts in internationalization, carrying out communication and cooperation with medical institutions from over 20 countries and regions including Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan.
