Mohe Summer Solstice Festival
The Summer Solstice Festival is a unique festival in Mohe, a county in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province known as China's "Arctic Village". According to its traditional conventions, villagers spontaneously come to the banks of the Heilongjiang River, light a fire, dance and wait for the aurora borealis to appear.
On the summer solstice, Beiji village has the longest daylight hours of anywhere in China, and people call the village on that day a "sleepless city". Beiji village sits a river away from Russia and is an ideal place to witness the amazing aurora borealis, or northern lights, in summer, thus attracting hundreds of people every year.
