WorldSkills, a biennial world championship competition of professional skills, will be held in Russia's Kazan in August and Guangzhou will send 12 of its technicians for the event.
After a 16-month selection process for the international event, the 12 technicians from Guangzhou stood out among 63 competitors in 56 projects across the country and will join the national delegation that will be sent to Kazan from Aug 22 to 27. Another 11 technicians in 11 projects from the southern metropolis were selected as backup contestants for the national delegation.
This is the fifth time that Guangzhou has sent its technicians to represent China in WorldSkills.
The projects that Guangzhou technicians will compete in refrigeration and air conditioning, prototyping, mobile robots, network system management, computer aided design and mechanical design, fine woodworking, heavy vehicle maintenance, fashion technology, woodworking, concrete construction, as well as masonry.
At the 44th WorldSkills in 2017 held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, the Chinese delegation ranked first in total gold medals and total number of medals with Guangzhou technicians pocketing two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.
Technical education in Guangzhou has a history of 67 years. There are currently 27 technical colleges across the southern Chinese city. The total number of full-time students is 105,300, and the employment rate of graduates in these schools reaches over 98 percent every year.
