A total of 28,100 consumers purchased 137,100 duty-free products in Hainan province during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday from June 7 to 9.
They generated a gross sales revenue of 95.27 million yuan ($13.78 million), a 51.18 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
Haikou Meilan Airport Duty Free Shop achieved robust growth. Its sales amount exceeded 20 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 73 percent. Online sales grew by 400 percent compared with last year's Dragon Boat Festival holiday period and the number of online shoppers almost tripled compared to last year's number.
Duty-free shopping has become a big motivator in attracting tourists to visit Hainan. Since the implementation of the policy, Hainan has generated 44.5 billion yuan of revenue in sales of duty-free goods.
