Haikou passed the national evaluations and became Hainan province's only water treatment demonstration city on June 10, according to the local water bureau.
The central government will provide a 400 million yuan ($57.85 million) subsidy to Haikou after it won the title.
An official from Haikou's water bureau said that the city will take the opportunity to enhance its water ecological protection and restoration efforts, as well as further make innovations to its comprehensive river basin management system.
By 2020, Haikou plans to essentially eliminate all water bodies deemed at an inferior class V pollution level or higher. It plans to ensure that the concentration of biochemical oxygen demand in the inflow of sewage treatment plants should be no less than 100 milligrams per liter. The landscape and function of water bodies in Haikou will achieve better results through the establishment of a long-term mechanism for the comprehensive improvement of the city's water environment.
