Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and the Guangzhou branch of telecom operator China Mobile signed an agreement on May 29 to build a smart campus with 5G technology.
Linguistic labs at the university will be empowered by 5G technology, banking on its large bandwidth, low time delay, and massive connectivity to link up the labs with online resources, remote videos, and virtual simulation technology.
The 5G technology will also facilitate a remote, mobile, and multiple-point simultaneous translation system.
The university's campus network will be integrated with the 5G network to create an Internet of Things management platform, which will include the systems for security, lighting, electricity, water, underground pipelines, fire prevention, vehicle management, and energy saving.
In its efforts to transform academic and administrative work with information technology, the university has built a national-level simultaneous translation lab center and created information platforms including a website, a mobile phone app, and WeChat applets, said Sui Guangjun, Party secretary of the university.
