Situated in Changsha, the capital of Central China's Hunan province, the Hunan Provincial Museum covers 49,000 square meters. Established in 1951, it is the largest museum of history and art in Hunan province.
Shouldering the responsibility of protecting and inheriting historic culture, the museum is seen as one of Changsha's cultural landmarks, providing a platform for visitors to delve deeply into the progress of civilization in Hunan.
With a collection of more than 180,000 pieces, items exhibited include those from Changsha's Mawangdui Tombs of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) and bronze ware from the Shang and Zhou dynasties (c.16th century-256 BC).
With the application of modern technologies, the Hunan Provincial Museum has developed four thematic exhibition halls, covering bronze ware, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings, providing visitors with a comprehensive demonstration of the outstanding cultural relics in the museum.
