As the weather warms up across China in early May, high-altitude areas of Fenghuang Mountain in Harbin, Heilongjiang province were blanketed in vast quantities of snow on May 6, turning the mountain into an icy wonderland.

Fenghuang Mountain covers an area of 50,000 hectares and has 89 peaks with a height of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, including its main peak, which is 1,690 m high—the highest peak in Heilongjiang province.

It is very rare to see snow in May, said a worker at the Fenghuang Mountain scenic area.

May 6 marked the Start of Summer (Chinese: 立夏) according to the Chinese traditional calendar, and signals the changing of seasons. On this day, the sun's rays reach an angle of 45 degrees to the earth, and temperatures begin rising quickly.
