Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) was founded in 1954 and is one of China's earliest established higher institutions of Chinese Medicine. NJUCM provided the first wave of teachers, compiled the first series of textbooks and created the first edition of syllabus for the higher education of Chinese Medicine within China, and for the last six decades, it has enjoyed the reputation as "the cradle of China's higher education of Chinese Medicine" both at home and abroad.

NJUCM now has two campuses located in Xianlin and Hanzhongmen of Nanjing, together covering an area of over 100 hectares. It boasts 9 directly affiliated schools, 30 affiliated hospitals, and over 100 training and internship bases. NJUCM offers 24 undergraduate programs, covering six disciplines including medicine, management, science, engineering, economics, and humanities. It has 44 master programs, 25 doctor programs and 3 post-doctoral programs, with over 20,000 students at various levels on campus.

NJUCM has produced a great number of prestigious scholars and experts whose reputation has spread both domestically and internationally, including 10 "Masters of Traditional Chinese Medicine", and 5 "Academicians of Traditional Chinese Medicine", accounting for 1/3 and 1/2 respectively of the national totals. Since the university’s foundation, it has cultivated over 30,000 advanced professionals in Chinese Medicine for the country.

Authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as the Ministry of Education respectively, NJUCM serves as a GCP Research Center for New Drugs Development and Engineering Center for Standardization of Chinese Medicine Processing. The NJUCM library, as a branch of the Chinese Medicine Literature Retrieval Center, has a collection of 900,000 books, 970,000 electronic books, 1,156 journals and over 20,000 electronic journals.

NJUCM is WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine designated by the World Health Organization, and is International Acupuncture Training Center approved by the Ministry of Health, and is one of the first advanced Chinese Medicine institutions authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students as well as students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. It has extensive communication and contact with over 90 countries and regions worldwide, and has established partnership with higher education institutions, government agencies and academic groups in over 30 countries and regions, which demonstrated its international influence.

In 1993, NJUCM pioneered the practice of cooperating with a western university to facilitate the Bachelor program of Chinese Medicine. NJUCM also undertook the first Master program of Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine at government level in 2005. A leading Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute was established by NJUCM in 2009 to introduce Chinese culture with special focus on Chinese Medicine. All these efforts have greatly contributed to the internationalization of Chinese Medicine throughout the world.
