The history of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center dates back to 1835 when Dr Peter Parker, a US missionary, founded the first Western-style ophthalmology clinic in China. In June 1983, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Zhongshan School of Medicine was founded, covering the Ophthalmic Hospital, the Ophthalmic Research Institution and the Office of Preventive Ophthalmology. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Zhongshan School of Medicine was the first modernized multifunctional ophthalmic center to combine medical care, teaching, and research with preventive ophthalmology. In October 2001, the center finally changed to Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University.
The center covers over 8,900 square meters with a floor area of 35,000 sq m and 320 beds. In 2018, the number of outpatient amounted to 1,130,000, the number of operations exceeded 78,000 and the average length of stay was 1.9 days.
Ophthalmology at the center is a national key clinical specialty and the corneal disease, glaucoma and cataract specialties are key medical specialties in Guangdong province.
The center has sent multiple medical teams to carry out international medical assistance in Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, the Maldives and Ghana, and received internationally recognition and awards.
