Shanxi received 39.84 million visitors, for year-on-year growth of 14.34 percent, and generated 18.45 billion yuan ($2.73 billion) in tourism revenue, up 20.05 percent year-on-year, during the May Day holiday from May 1 to 4.
Tourists aged between 25 and 34 made up the majority of visitors, accounting for 57.2 percent. Officials said that 65.6 percent of travelers chose a family tour during the holiday.
As for traveling modes, an estimated 67.1 percent of travelers drove themselves to destinations, making up the most popular form of excursion, while the next highest category was rail.
According to a report released by the Shanxi Provincial Tourism Development Commission, flower appreciation, hiking and rural picnicking activities, remained popular with crowds.
Cultural venues such as museums, art galleries and cultural theme towns have grown to become a hit with tourists – and more than 90 percent of tourists took part in cultural activities during the latest holiday.
