Several bird-watching houses and platforms were recently constructed at Wuyuan River Wetland Park in Haikou to facilitate bee-eater appreciation, according to the Haikou Xiuying District Wetland Protection and Management Center.
Bee-eaters have flamboyant and colorful feathers, and they are dubbed as "China's most beautiful birds." They like to stay in offshore open areas and forests.
In May 2018, the blue-throated and chestnut-throated bee-eaters were first found in the downstream of Wuyuan River, which generated great attention.
The reproduction season of the bee-eater is from April to July. On March 29 this year, the wetland protection and management center started to build bee-eater habitats in the downstream of Wuyuan River to retain bee-eater breeding in this area. The artificial habitat has attracted a lot of these birds to inhabit it.
The bird-watching houses are made of bamboo poles and the roofs are covered by camouflage sun-proof cloth. "The houses are harmoniously blended in nature, which provides a superb place for bird appreciation without frightening them," said an official of Xiuying district government.
