Founded in 1946, Guangdong People's Hospital is the largest comprehensive hospital in the province and one of the largest and most comprehensive hospitals in China. The hospital has a construction area of nearly 230,000 square meters, with 5,251 employees, including 4,402 health technicians and 706 senior titles. The hospital has 2,852 beds and 110,600 patients discharged  per year. The annual operation volume has reached 74,900. The hospital has six outpatient departments and the number of outpatients was about 4.183 million in 2015.

The hospital has dozens of national key clinical specialties, such as cardiology, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery and clinical nursing, and dozens of provincial key specialties and disciplines, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, neonatology, critical care medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery. 

The hospital has four provincial key laboratories: Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Coronary Heart Disease Prevention and Control, the Key Laboratory of Structural Heart Disease of South China, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Lung Cancer Translational Medicine, and the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology. In the past 10 years, the hospital has won 25 provincial science and technology awards, including four first prizes, and has been granted 69 patents, including 26 invention patents. It has undertaken 1,532 research projects at different levels, including 161 national projects. 

The hospital has undertaken internship teaching tasks for more than 600 students from several universities such as Southern Medical University, Zhongshan University, Shantou University, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Medical University, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, and Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. More than 1,200 students are received every year.

The hospital is the designated hospital of the provincial health department for the treatment of foreign patients with avian flu and influenza A. It was the designated hospital for the 2010 Asian Games. The Concord ward has a wealth of foreign-related medical experience and has been recognized by more than 30 foreign insurance companies. Its quality medical services are highly valued by foreign patients. 

The hospital also focuses on exchanges and cooperation with foreign hospitals, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, Toronto Children's Hospital, the University of Western Australia School of Medicine, Odense University Hospital in Denmark, and Caritas Hospital in Hong Kong.
