A summit focusing on the innovation and development of 5G technology opened in Shanghai on April 23.
The summit convened representatives from leading enterprises in the industry to discuss issues related to the application of 5G in Shanghai.
Shanghai's Pudong New Area revealed its plan to push forward the development of 5G systems equipment and 5G chips in the areas of Jinqiao and Zhangjiang, respectively.
"Shanghai has been exploring the application of 5G in manufacturing, transportation, education, medical care and many other fields," said Ying Yong, mayor of Shanghai.
More than 10,000 5G base stations will be built in Shanghai by the end of 2019, covering key areas in urban and suburban areas. By 2021, a total of 30,000 5G base stations will be built, which will effectively provide citywide 5G coverage, said Zhang Jianming, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
Additionally, the Shanghai Municipal Government and China Unicom signed a cooperation agreement pertaining to the promotion of 5G during the summit.
According to the agreement, Shanghai will be the first 5G trial city of China Unicom, one of China's three telecoms carriers, while China Unicom will promote the incubation and industrial upgrading of 5G in Shanghai.
