The Shenyang City University robot team defeated nine rival university teams in the China stage of the 2019 RoboCup Championship to win through to the finals – to be held in Sydney, Australia this July, the Shenyang Daily reported.
The RoboCup is a professional robot competition with a very large following, featuring a high level of cutting-edge technology and a wide range of participation. It was proposed by Alan Mackworth, a professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada, in 1992.
According to organizers, its purpose is to provide a landmark and challenging topic to spur the development of artificial intelligence and intelligent robotics through robot soccer competitions, providing a standardized environment for dynamic confrontation in related fields.
At the final of the 2019 RoboCup China Open Competition held in Shaoxing, in eastern Zhejiang province on April 21, the Shenyang team vanquished the Zhejiang University team with a score of 4:1.
The humanoid soccer robots helping the Shenyang team win the championship were independently created by the research and development team at Shenyang City University Xinsongludao Humanoid Robot Engineering Center. The soccer robot is protected by independent intellectual property rights and features robot vision, autonomous navigation and speech recognition.
In 2016 Shenyang City University built its humanoid robot engineering center, which covers an area of 4,000 square meters. In 2018, a laboratory and assembly manufacturing workshops – involved in such areas as artificial intelligence and deep learning, robot vision and robot simulation -- were added.
Last month, the university approved offering a robotics engineering major in its curriculum -- an initiative seen boosting the development of related engineering majors such as intelligent science and technology, mechanical design and manufacturing, automation, computer science and technology.
