A new high-speed viaduct project linking the central urban area of Harbin city to its international airport started construction on April 21. Officials said it is expected to open to traffic by the end of 2021.
The viaduct -- starting at Xuefu Road and extending along Yichun Road, Minzhu Avenue and the existing airport road -- will be 35.2 kilometers long. The total investment for the project will come in at 16.2 billion yuan ($2.42 billion).
The viaduct will become the second fast channel connecting the city with the airport when it is put into use, further meeting the transportation needs of Harbin's international aviation hub and improving the transportation infrastructure network of the city.
Wang Zhaoli, Party secretary of Harbin, and Li Zhangjing, chairman of China Railway Group Limited, attended a ground-breaking ceremony held on April 21.
