Dongji Islands

The Dongji Islands can be translated to East Pole Islands in Chinese. It is not a formal geographical name, nor a single island. It is a general term for all the islands under the jurisdiction of Dongji town, Putuo district, Zhoushan.

Known as Lijiang of the sea, Dongji Islands is located at the eastern end of China, with 28 islands and 108 reefs. Surrounded by the East China Sea, it is 45 kilometers away from Shenjiamen and far from downtown Zhoushan. The place boasts not only beautiful natural scenery, pleasant climate, and clear water, but also a profound fisherman's culture.

The main scenic spots in Dongji Islands include Miaozi Lake, Qingbang Island, Dongfu Mountain, and Huangxing Island.

Legend goes that during the Qin Dynasty, Xu Fu, a Taoist priest, led 3,000 children to the East China Sea for Qin Shihuang to find the answer of achieving immortality for Emperor Qin. They stopped the journey at Dongfu Mountain and disappeared from any recorded history.

The island was first discovered by photographers and sea angling enthusiasts, and then became famous on the Internet. Due to its distance from the land, the sea by the Dongji Island presents a blue color, unique to the sea. It attracts many tourists in summer, and has becomes the second most popular tourist attraction in Zhoushan, behind Putuo Mountain.
