China's first ultra-thin belt production line recently began industrial production in Zhangjiagang, East China's Jiangsu province, local media reported.

The ultra-thin belt production line, featuring double rolls thin strip casting and rolling technology, is the first in China and third in the world.

It was developed by Shagang Group and Nucor Cooperation, the largest steel production company in America. The term ultra-thin refers to steel between 0.8 mm and 2 mm thick.

The total length of the ultra-thin belt is one tenth of a traditional belt, which greatly reduces energy costs. The belt also reduces gas consumption by 95 percent and electricity consumption by 90 percent.

The Shagang ultra-thin belt project was launched in August 2016. To date, it has a maximum annual output of 500,000 tons.
