Pudong reveals new layout for biomedicine industry

A news conference regarding the high-quality development of the biomedical industry in Shanghai's Pudong New Area was held on April 2. The conference also released a new layout for the area's biomedical industry.

Relying on the existing biomedical industrial park in Pudong's Zhangjiang Science City, Pudong plans to build four new industrial bases to gather more industrial elements.

"With more than 20 years of development, the biomedical industry in Pudong New Area has made remarkable progress. The four new industrial bases in the area are designed to inject new energy into the transformation and industrialization of innovative drugs and medical devices," said Tang Shiqing, vice-chairman of the CPPCC Pudong New Area Committee.

The four bases have a planned area of nearly 10 square kilometers. Among them, the Zhangjiang Innovative Drug Industrial Base covers an area of about three square kilometers and will focus on the industrialization of innovative drugs and medical technology as well as high-end manufacturing.

The Zhangjiang Medical Device Industrial Base covers an area of about four square kilometers and is positioned as the R&D and production base of high-end medical devices.

With these two bases as important sources of growth, the industrial output value of the manufacturing industry and the revenue of the high-tech service industry in Pudong are expected to reach a combined total of 100 billion yuan ($14.91 billion) by 2020.

By 2025, the area is expected to be formed into an internationally influential biomedical innovation base and industrial cluster.

Additionally, a total of 30 projects were signed during the conference, with a total investment of nearly 35 billion yuan and an estimated capacity of 80 billion yuan.

"Today's signing ceremony reflects the determination of Shanghai, Pudong New Area and Zhangjiang in the biomedical industry," said Chen li, CEO of Hua medicine, a company involved in the signing.

In 2018, the industrial output value and service industry revenue of the biomedical industry in Pudong New Area reached 67.2 billion yuan. The industrial output value of manufacturing enterprises above the designated level reached 54.8 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 16.2 percent.
