The government of Hohhot has signed an agreement with Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor to develop a monocrystalline silicon program in the city, which is the capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region on March 19.

The program, which is set to receive a total investment of 9 billion yuan ($1.34 billion), will target an annual wafer production capacity of 25 gigawatts (GW).

According to the agreement, the program will start construction in mid-April and be put into operation in October 2021. It is expected to bring the city’s total wafer production capacity to 50GW, accounting for over 50 percent of the global amount.

It will also help Hohhot build itself into the largest production base for monocrystalline silicon in the world and play a vital role in promoting the city’s growth.

The agreement follows years of cooperation with Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor.

The company started to establish branches and build the Zhonghuan industrial park in Hohhot during 2009. By the end of 2018, 16 companies had been introduced to the park, with total investment reaching 30 billion yuan.

Last year, the output value of the industrial park reached nearly 10 billion yuan.
