Danya Mountain
Danya Mountain in the northwest of Penglai, a county-level city in Yantai, has been famous as a fairyland since ancient times. The mountain got its name due to the red brown color of its rocks and steep cliffs (dan means "red" in Chinese while ya refers to steep cliffs). It has an elevation of more than 50 meters.
On top of the mountain is the world-renowned Penglai Pavilion, which is an ancient architectural complex. Its main building was first constructed in 1061 during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Renovations and expansions in different styles were made in the following dynasties, with several temples, palaces, attics and pavilions added.
At the foot of the mountain is Penglai Water City, which was first built in 1376 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and eventually formed a complete marine defense system after several renovations and expansions. Qi Jiguang (1528-88), a Ming general, even trained the navy and fought there against Japanese pirates.
