The marine biomedical industry produces biochemicals, health products and genetic engineering drugs by extracting ingredients from marine organisms through biotechnology. In recent years, many countries have prioritized the marine biomedical industry as a strategic industry, and proposed development plans and political measures to keep up with global trends.
In June 2011, the State Council approved the establishment of Zhejiang Zhoushan New District, marking a new step for Zhoushan to enter the marine economy. As a strategic emerging industry, the marine biomedical industry has become one of the key industries in local marine economic development.
The marine biomedical industry got underway in the 1980s, with the development of the traditional aquatic product processing industry. Hailisheng Group in Zhoushan started to produce fish oil products, while various small enterprises became involved in refined iodine extraction and algae processing.
After more than 20 years of development, the city has come to maturity in the production of marine biopharmaceuticals, with strong R&D capabilities. There are currently eight local enterprises engaged in the production of marine biomedical products, including polyene, aminoglycoside tablets, squalene, fish gelatin and sea ink hemostasis.
With the constant efforts made in the marine deep processing industry, the city has supported a group of intensive processing enterprises with strong capabilities, scientific and technological innovation ability and advanced equipment.
