Nanjing University (NJU), one of China's elite universities, decided to build a new campus in Suzhou New District, Jiangsu province, local media reported on March 17.
The news was released after a signing ceremony between Suzhou Municipal Government and NJU on March 16.
With an area of 2,000 mu (133.33 hectares), the campus is expected to grow into an application-oriented university, an innovative graduate school and also house research and development platforms and industrial bases of innovative technologies.
Zhou Naixiang, Party secretary of Suzhou, said at the signing ceremony that NJU is a world-renowned university and Suzhou is dedicated to constructing itself into a city known for innovation and entrepreneurship.
He believes that both sides will complement their respective advantages to better each other.
Zhou hopes the two sides will seize the opportunities of the construction of Yangtze River Economic Belt and the integration of the Yangtze River Delta region to build the Suzhou campus into a second NJU and boost the city's high quality development.
Hu Jinbo, Party secretary of NJU, said that establishing a Suzhou campus is an important move for NJU's further development and they will make the campus a famous name card of the city's culture and education.
In recent years, NJU has conducted strategic cooperation with Suzhou in scientific and technological innovation, industrial upgrading, talent training, and cultural construction.
The university established a series of institutes in the city, including NJU Suzhou Graduate School and NJU Suzhou Innovation Institute.
