The first bus in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to be equipped with a 5G wireless network has recently been launched by the Guangxi Branch of China Telecom in Nanning, offering locals a glimpse into the next-generation technology.

The bus route stretches 16 kilometers from the intersection of Minzu Avenue and Gonghe Road to Langdong Coach Station and consists of 20 stops including Minzu, Binhu, and Jinhu plazas, the Zhuxi Interchange, and Shimen Forest Park. People will have the chance to take a free 5G-expeience ride until June 30.

According to an executive of the Guangxi Branch of China Telecom, 5G technology promises higher speeds, lower latency, and a better connection than 4G. 5G can reach speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s, 10 to 100 times quicker than 4G. This allows the minimum reaction distance of self-driving vehicles to be cut from 1.4 meters to 2.8 centimeters.

Meanwhile, the new technology also allows for a 10 to 100-fold increase in traffic density, which means more than 1 million devices, such as street lamps, traffic lights, and surveillance cameras, in an area of one square kilometer can all connect to the same 5G network.

Passengers can play 16 high-definition videos simultaneously without frustration and download an ultra-high-definition film within one second.

With the launch of the 5G bus, the Guangxi branch of China Telecom is expected to start a new wave of digital economic growth and propel emerging industries in the region.
