Relying on its unique geographical advantages, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has been accelerating its role linking China with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members through a complex traffic network encompassing seaports, airports, railways, and highways.
In 2018, Guangxi's fixed-asset investment in waterway transportation reached 3.4 billion yuan ($50.7 million), accounting for 108 percent of its target task. This year, investment for waterway construction is expected to hit 6 billion yuan.
The region's container throughput completed by above-scale ports was 3.96 million standard containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 24.2 percent year-on-year.
Guangxi's Beibu Gulf ports, which consists of Qinzhou Port, Fangchenggang Port, and Beihai Port, play a critical role in the construction of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative Southern Transport Corridor, as well as the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2018, shipping routes from the Beibu Gulf ports can reach many ASEAN member countries. A number of deep water harbors are under construction.
