In 2018, the total length of railway lines in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has reached 5,202 kilometers from 1,346.3 km in 1958, transporting 115 million passengers in total, with a year-on-year increase of 12.3 percent. The freight volume totaled 105 million metric tons, up 5 percent year-on-year. The region put 10.2 billion yuan ($1.52 billion) into railway construction in 2018, and the railway has become a transportation artery, bringing economic opportunities to Guangxi.

According to Guangxi's railway construction planning under the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the operation mileage of railways in the region will reach 5,500 km, and that of high-speed rails will reach 2,000 km. A "five vertical and five horizontal trunk railway network" is expected to take shape in Guangxi by 2020. In addition, a number of high-speed railways and interurban railways are involved in the railway construction plan.

Costing 10 billion yuan, Guangxi will begin construction on the Nanning-Yulin Intercity Railway and advance construction on the Guiyang-Nanning, Nanning-Chongzuo, and Fangchenggang-Dongxing railways as well. Preliminary work on the Nanning-Guilin-Hengyang, Nanning-Hepu, and Hechi-Liuzhou-Hezhou high-speed railways will be expedited.

Existing main railways:

Guizhou-Guangxi Railway: from Liuzhou in Guangxi to Guiyang, Guizhou province.

Hunan-Guangxi Railway (Xianggui Line): from Hengyang in Hunan province to Guangxi’s three principal cities: Nanning, Liuzhou, and Guilin. Most other railways in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region are connected to the Xianggui Line.

Nanning-Kunming Railway: heads west from Nanning to Kunming, Yunnan province.

Jiaozuo-Liuzhou Railway: from Jiaozuo, Henan province to Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Litang-Zhanjiang Railway: from Litang, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.

Luoyang-Zhanjiang Railway: from Luoyang, Henan province to Zhanjiang, Guangdong province.

Yunnan-Guangxi Border Railway: from Fangchenggang, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to Wenshan, Yunnan province.

Huangtong-Baise Railway: from Huangtong, Guizhou province to Baise, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Liuzhou-Guangzhou Railway: from Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

Fuling-Liuzhou Railway: from Fuling, Chongqing to Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
