The tourism industry in Xiliinhot, a city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region saw a staggering increase in both revenues and the number of visitors over the past year, according to local media reports.
The city welcomed more than 4.36 million visitors and grossed 8.7 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in tourism revenues during 2018 –– year-on-year increases of 1.5 percent and 4.2 percent respectively.
It is thought that the increase is partly attributable to the popularity of tourism websites and an official WeChat account opened by the local tourism department.
In recent years, the city has become more adept at promoting its attractions and attracting a more diverse range of visitors.
