The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council have jointly issued a regulation on a food safety responsibility system which includes food safety into the performance evaluations of local Party and government leaders.

This is the first inner-Party regulation on the food safety accountability of local Party and government leaders, which is expected to be a long-term mechanism to guarantee food safety.

According to the regulation, local Party and government leaders at various levels shoulder full responsibility for food safety work, and local Party and government leaders are the first persons responsible for local food safety work.

The regulation stresses a comprehensive food safety supervision system that covers the quality and safety supervision of edible agricultural products and the processing and production of foods, as well as supervision over other aspects of food safety.

The regulation is expected to promote joint cooperation of various departments and fields in terms of food safety work, with local Party and government leaders to be accountable for any food safety issues.
