The Urumqi Comprehensive Bonded Zone was set up in July 2015 with approval of the State Council, becoming the third comprehensive bonded zone in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It started official operation in November 2017. It has been making breakthroughs in the bonded processing and warehousing business since March 2018. With a planned area of 2.41 square kilometers, the bonded zone is located close to the airport in the northwestern part of Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang. It was built based on the previous Urumqi Export Processing Zone.
As an important facility to develop the export-oriented economy in the core area of the Silk Road economic belt, the Urumqi Comprehensive Bonded Zone aims to be a special customs supervision and control zone with multi-functions including bonded processing, bonded warehousing, port operation and comprehensive services. By taking advantage of the international land ports and freight trains linking China and European countries, the bonded zone has actively participated in the construction of the core area of the Silk Road economic belt.
As of June 2018, the accumulated input of the bonded zone reached 2.8 billion yuan ($414 million). The infrastructure and monitoring facilities have been well developed, the first phase of the international trade service zone has been partially put into use and the cross-border e-commerce logistics warehouse is under construction. Thirty-one companies have settled down in the bonded zone.
