Hainan Medical University (HMU) is located in the coastal city of Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan province.
According to a report jointly released by China's national outlets people.cn and gmw.cn, HMU is the second best university in the province and the only medical institute of higher learning in any tropical area in China.
HMU's main campus, located on Xueyuan Road, covers an area of 628 mu (41.87 hectares) and boasts a 33,000-square-meter library. The university offers four disciplines, 23 majors, 15 departments, seven affiliated hospitals, and 101 training centers, including community hospitals and health clinics. HMU is home to about 1,000 lecturers and 11,604 students, among which 393 are international.
HMU's history dates back to 1993 with the merging of two private medical schools, the Haiqiang Medical Vocational School (founded in 1947) and the Medical College of Hainan University (founded in 1948). In 1949, the school was rebuilt as the Hainan Medical Vocational School and later became the Medical Department of Hainan University. In 1993, with approval from the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Hainan Medical University to reflect its focus on medicine.
Over the course of two decades, HMU has sent over 40,000 graduates to over 10 countries and regions across the world. Seven of the ten presidents of Hainan's 22 general hospitals graduated from HMU.
Adhering to the Belt and Road Strategy, HMU enrolls international students from 32 countries and regions. It carries out exchange programs with over 10 renowned universities, including the University of Utah, Newcastle University, the Queensland University of Technology, and the University of Tehran.
