The Chengdu-Chongqing city cluster has been cultivating a number of pillar industries, as Sichuan province boasts rich resources and Chongqing municipality, a modern manufacturing base and inland financial center, enjoys many preferential policies.
Equipment manufacturing
Sichuan has been one of three major manufacturing hubs in China. It is now home to 1,500 manufacturing companies, and industrial clusters of power-generating equipment and oil rigging equipment makers. The province is also planning to increase efforts to develop aviation, rail transport, energy conservation, and smart manufacturing.
Home to some 430 equipment manufacturing enterprises, Chongqing boasts advantages in many key sectors, including instrumentation, combustion engines, machine tools, large-scaled power transmission and transformation equipment, hydroelectric equipment, and ship building.
Electronic information
Electronic information is the number one pillar industry of Sichuan province. With strong advantages in display technology, integrated circuits, network security, and wearable devices, the province generates a sales revenue of over 800 billion yuan ($119 billion) from the sector.
Chongqing has also established several industrial clusters of integrated circuits, software research, development and outsourcing, communication product manufacturing, and information appliance manufacturing. The city's laptop manufacturing industry boasts five competitive brands, Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Toshiba, ASUS, and Cisco, the six contract manufacturers of Foxconn, Inventec, Quanta Computer, Pegatron, Wistron, and Compal, as well as 800 other enterprises.
Energy
Sichuan is rich in mineral resources. It has more than 132 kinds of proven underground mineral resources including vanadium, titanium, and lithium being the largest in China. Sichuan also possesses China's largest proven natural gas reserves, the majority of which is transported to more developed eastern regions.
Chongqing focuses on the exploitation of coal, natural gas, and shale gas, as well as thermal, hydro, wind, and biomass power generation. It will also eye nuclear power in the future and try to establish a clean, efficient, and sustainable energy supply system.
Automobiles and motorcycles
As one of the four major automobile production bases in China, Chongqing has incubated a series of famous brands including Chongqing Chang'an, Chang'an Ford, and Lifan. The products vary from passenger cars to trucks and special vehicles. The city is also China's biggest motorcycle producer and exporter.
Chemicals
Chongqing is China's biggest natural gas chemical industry base and one of the most important bases of refining and coal-based chemical industries in the country. Its production of acetylene, methyl alcohol, and acetic acid ranks first in the country, and its technology for producing chemicals like hydracid and carbamide reaches national and even international levels.
