Set up in April 1992, Yueyang Economic and Technological Development Zone was upgraded into a State-level development zone in March 2010 under the approval of the State Council. With a total area of 253 square kilometers, it has a population of about 300,000.

Sitting at the junction of Central China's Wuhan City Circle and Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan City Cluster, the zone is at the forefront of Hunan’s opening-up efforts. Adjacent to Yueyang Chenglingji Port, the largest port in Hunan, the zone enjoys comprehensive traffic networks integrating highways, railways, aviation, and water transportation.

Centering on the construction of an industrial system of modern manufacturing and biotechnology, the zone strives to develop its emerging industries, including the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, biological medicine, and the energy conservation and environmental protection industries. Its competitive industries, particularly magnetic and petrochemical equipment, continue to grow bigger and stronger. The zone boasts 121 industrial enterprises above a designated size, accounting for 10 percent of the total of its kind in Yueyang.

In the first half of 2018, the zone generated 12.16 billion yuan ($1.8 billion) in GDP, an increase of 7.3 percent from the previous year. The total income from technology, industry and trade reached 50.57 billion yuan, up 10.4 percent.
