Located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, the Northwestern Polytechnical University (hereinafter referred to as "NWPU") is the only multi-disciplinary, research-oriented, and open-ended university in China characterized by all-around development of education and research programs in aeronautics, astronautics, and marine technology engineering. It was one of the first universities to enter Project 211 and Project 985.
Currently NWPU has more than 26,000 students, and 3,700 instructors, and consists of two campuses, Youyi and Chang'an, which cover a land area of 3,400,000 square meters, or about 840 acres; the university has 16 specialized schools, plus an International College and an Honors College, offering 65 undergraduate degree programs, 32 master degrees in the first-tier disciplines, 120 graduate research stations, 22 doctoral degrees in the first-tier disciplines, 71 doctoral research stations, and 17 mobile post-doctoral research stations. Four subjects, namely chemistry, engineering, materials, and physics, were listed on the top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global subject ranking.
Currently in the university there are 26 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including external employment), 21 winners of the Thousand Talents Program, 30 winners of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 12 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 7 chief scientists for the National Basic Research Program (Program 973), 2 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, and 4 prize winners as nationally outstanding teachers. There are also 2 innovation research groups funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 national teaching teams, 7 innovation teams designated by the Ministry of Education, and 8 national defense innovation teams.
The university's strengthened effort in educational research has had fruitful results. Four National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 2 National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, and 3 National Talent Training Mode Innovation Experimental Areas have been established. The university is the only initiator and the general coordinator in Asia for the QB50 mission (EU 7FP project), and the biggest satellite tracking, telemetry & control ground station in Asia established under the project.
NWPU has established in-depth partnerships with more than 250 internationally renowned colleges and universities, companies, and scientific research institutions from various countries and regions, including Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Australia, South Korea, the United States, and Japan. NWPU was the rotating chairman for the Sino-Russian Federation of Engineering Universities in 2016-2017, and the rotating chairman for the China-ASEAN Federation of Engineering Universities in 2016. The university initiated the Belt and Road Space Innovation Alliance in 2017, and functions as the standing secretariat. Honorary titles, like honorary professor, have been awarded to 244 internationally renowned experts and scholars, including Nobel laureates. Nine foreign experts have won the China national Friendship Award.
Currently there are more than 2,000 international students in the university, accounting for 7 percent of the student body.
