The Special Economic Zone, Khorgos – Eastern Gate, one of the 10 special economic zones in Kazakhstan, was set up in November 2011 in the easternmost part of the country.
Being only 15 kilometers from the Chinese city of Khorgas, the zone enjoys unique geographic advantages and plays an important part in bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and China.
The zone covers a planning area of 45.92 square km with 5.78 sq km expected to be developed soon, including a 1.29 sq km waterless port, a 2.25 sq km logistics park, a 2.24 sq km industrial area and the Atenkeri railway changing station.
A cooperation contract was signed in 2015 between Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway company of Kazakhstan, to jointly develop Horgos Special Economic Zone. Jiangsu’s companies were encouraged to invest in the zone.
The special economic zone was designed for the development of warehouse logistics and to manage other areas such as food product production, textile manufacturing, chemicals, mechanical equipment, and business and living.
