Constructed in 1958, Hainan Tropical Botanical Garden sits in Baodao New Village, Danzhou, South China's Hainan province. It is affiliated with the Tropical Crops Genetic Resources Institute (TCGRI) of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences (CATAS).
It is not only a comprehensive research institution but also a popular scenic spot that integrates scientific research, species preservation, and science education. It has been awarded with the designations of "National Science Education Base" and "Provincial Tourism Designated Unit."
After nearly 60 years of development, Hainan Tropical Botanical Garden now covers an area of 100 hectares. It is home to 2,600 kinds of tropical and subtropical plants from over 40 countries and regions, including over 50 kinds of the national protection of endangered plants, over 750 kinds of tropical flowers, and 1,000 kinds of traditional Chinese herbs.
The garden consists of eight major independent areas, namely for aquatic plants, bamboo, medicinal plants, spices, economic plants, ornamental plants, tropical fruits and palm plants.
Visitors often marvel at the beauty of various exotic plants at Hainan Tropical Botanical Garden such as: Antiaris, one of the world's most toxic trees; Synsepalum dulcificum, a miracle fruit that can change one's sense of taste temporarily; Adenanthera, a token for love and friendship; Saraca asoca, the tree which Lord Buddha was born under; Sandalwood and caesalpinia, known as lovers' trees; Kigelia africana and cassia fistula, trees known for their hanging shells; Samanea samon, known as rain trees;– Cananga odorata, often called the king of flowers; Ravenala madagascariensis, known for its nickname, "Spring in the desert"; Sindora, renowned as an energy plant; and many more.
New species and technologies developed in the garden have benefited nine provinces in China's tropical areas. In addition, the garden has offered technical support and training sessions to more than 20 countries. It is also cooperating with many international enterprises and organizations to carry out long-term R&D programs on tropical agriculture.
Hainan Tropical Botanical Garden is committed to creating a "kingdom" of tropical plants featuring scientific popularization, which is in line with the overall strategy of building Hainan into an international tourism island.
