Covering an overall planned area of 47 square kilometers, Binxi Economic and Technological Development Zone, located 29 kilometers to the east of Harbin, is a provincial development zone approved by the Heilongjiang provincial government in September 2002. It was officially upgraded to a national level zone under the approval of the State Council in June 2010.
Agricultural and sideline product processing, packaging, and photoelectric materials are the leading industries in the zone. By 2014, it has introduced 169 projects each with an investment of over 10 million yuan ($1.48 million), with contracts worth 47.1 billion yuan.
In 2013, the GDP of the zone totaled 6.36 billion yuan, up 40.1 percent year-on-year. The total output value of industrial enterprises above designated size reached 22.63 billion yuan, up 52.5 percent year-on-year. Imports and exports amounted to $52.11 million, including $10.26 million of exports to Russia, and the foreign investment was $147.65 million.
