The 500-kilovolt power transmission project of Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province entered operation on Jan 15 after a week's debugging work.

The project, worth 4.62 billion yuan ($682.9 million) and with a long construction period of 749 days, is one of the nation's largest and most complex cross-sea power transmission projects to have been ever undertaken.

It sets many world records with some of its remarkable achievements, such as the building of the two highest pylons and the world's first 500kv cross-linked polyethylene insulated submarine cable, greatly enhancing China's position in the global marine power transmission technology field.

This is the second upgrading of the city's power grid in eight years after it was enhanced from 110kv to 220kv in 2010.

During these eight years, Zhoushan witnessed a rapid growth of its economy, with its GDP increasing from around 63.3 billion yuan in 2010 to 121.9 billion yuan in 2017, and its total electricity consumption rising from 4.1 billion to 5.2 billion kilowatt-hours.

As the 500kv power project enters operation, the city will expect more robust economic growth in the future with the support of more power supplies, and achieve a great leap forward in the construction of its Green Petrochemical Base.
