By the end of 2017, common roads in Nantong covered 18,400 kilometers, including 543.56 km of State roads, 743.58 km of provincial roads and 2,530.2 km of county roads.

In 2017, Nantong invested 518 million yuan ($76.72 million) in projects to construct arterial highways. The eastern part around Nantong city of National Highway No 345, which is 27 km long, opened to traffic in 2017. Six repair projects were also carried in the city, with investment reaching 90 million yuan.

In 2017, Nantong launched a four-year project to upgrade rural roads. A total of 910 km of rural road and 275 bridges were renovated in the first year of the project.

The annual passenger throughput of highways in Nantong reached 73.1 million in 2017, down 10.9 percent compared with last year, and annual cargo throughput was 126.56 million tons, up 9.7 percent year-on-year.
