Millennium City Park, Kaifeng
(开封清明上河园 kāi fēnɡ qīng míng shàng hé yuán)
Millennium City Park in Kaifeng, Henan province is a large-scale historical cultural park featuring Song culture, built according to the famous painting Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival. Construction started in 1992 and the park was opened to the public in 1998 with an area of more than 600 mu (40 hectares), including 180 mu of water areas and over 400 houses.
It boasts numerous wonderful scenic spots, including the Rainbow Bridge, a Wall painting of Qingming Festival by the Riverside, and the Kissing Cloud Pavilion, all of which are full of Song elements. The Rainbow Bridge, a splendid wooden arch bridge that crosses the Bianhe River, which flows through Bianliang, the capital city of the dynasty and today's Kaifeng, is considered one of China’s ten famous ancient bridges. The Kissing Cloud Pavilion, “fuyun” in Chinese, meaning touching the clouds, is the tallest building in the park.
The park also produced a grand live-action show on water, which uses a lot of technology and more than 700 performers to bring the audience’s minds back to the Northern Song Dynasty 1000 years ago. The 70 minute theatrical performance takes inspiration from nine poems and the painting, Qingming Festival by the Riverside, fully using a lake, pavilions, terraces and buildings to create a highly acclaimed live-action show.
