Messages honoring the memory of Sir Run Run Shaw, a Hong Kong entertainment mogul and philanthropist native to Ningbo, Zhejiang province, were widely spread on China's social media platforms on Jan 7, the date when Shaw passed away five years ago.
Shaw was the co-founder of the Shaw Brothers (HK) Ltd, one of the largest film production companies in Hong Kong, and TVB, the dominant television company in Hong Kong.
Additionally, Shaw was a well-known philanthropist that donated over tens of billions of Hong Kong dollars to educational and medical institutions in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
Nearly 30,000 buildings on Chinese college campuses bear Shaw's name. He also established the Shaw Prize for Astronomy, Life Science & Medicine and Mathematical Sciences in 2002 to award Chinese scientists who make contributions in these respects.
Shaw was awarded with the titles of "Honorary Citizen of Ningbo" in 1993 and "Model Individual with Great Love for Hometown" in 1994 by the Ningbo municipal government and the Zhejiang provincial government, respectively, for his remarkable contributions to his hometown.
