A high-purity crystalline silicon project funded by investment from Inner Mongolia Tongwei High-purity Crystalline Silicon Co has started operations in Baotou, North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, according to Baotou Daily.
High-purity crystalline silicon is an important raw material used in the solar photovoltaic industry and is mainly used to produce downstream products, such as silicon wafers, cell sheets and components.
In the past, China's high-purity crystalline silicon mainly relied on imports. But in recent years, the domestic polysilicon industry has been working to increase the proportion of it produced at home, reducing the need for foreign suppliers.
The Inner Mongolia Tongwei High-purity Crystalline Silicon Project, a strategic emerging industry venture introduced by Baotou city, was launched in October 2017 and officially started operations following a 12-month period –– much shorter than the usual 18-month construction period for domestic enterprises and the international standard of 36 to 60 months.
