Thanks to the tropical climate, the province’s agriculture mainly features off-sea fishery, paddy rice, natural rubber, coconut and palm as well as promoting the development of modern agriculture services concerning logistics, insurance, processing, agricultural e-commerce and agriculture-themed tourism.

Hainan has an average annual rainfall of 1500-2000 mm with a total amount of about 58.5 billion cubic meters. Its per capita water resources rank at the top of the country and its light intensity reaches 50-60 percent, with solar radiation up to 130 kcal per square centimeter. Due to those favorable conditions, crops grow much higher in Hainan than other parts of China. The farmland can be cultivated all the year round and slope farming can yield 2-3 harvests a year. In addition to food crops and vegetables, dozens of cash crops are also grown, such as rubber, sugar cane, coconut, pineapple, banana, pepper, mango, litchi, coffee, cocoa, sisal, cashew nuts, tea, and so on.

In the first half of 2018, the tropical agriculture saw an added value of 39.62 billion yuan ($5.78 billion), an year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent, and contributed to 570 million yuan of tax revenue, which grew by 21.1 percent compared with the same period last year.

The sightseeing and leisure agriculture received 11.6 million visits and gained 7.1 billion yuan in business revenue, rising by 17 and 10.6 percent, respectively. The thriving industry has provided 26,000 new jobs for farmers, adding to the total of 126,000.
