Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is located in Liwan district, Guangzhou. It is one of the three traditional prosperous commercial centers between Shangjiu Road, Xiajiu Road, and Dishifu Road. The street is 1,237 meters long, with a total of more than 300 commercial shops of all kinds and thousands of commercial tenants.
Being the first pedestrian mall to be approved in Guangzhou by the Ministry of Commerce in China, this shopping street receives a daily traffic of more than 600,000 persons. The street is a showcase of traditional Cantonese architecture, Lingnan architectural culture, Lingnan food culture, and also Lingnan folk customs. Additionally, the street features a variety of restaurants and street vendors where tourists can find delicious Dim Sum and local snacks.
Old Qilou buildings are landmarks of Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. Qilou is a unique architectural style in Guangzhou that dominated business streets between the 1920s and 1930s. The Guangzhou Qilou style spread to other provinces in the south China area, such as Fujian, Guizhou, and Jiangxi. In Shanghai and Wuhan, Qilou eventually became a well-known feature of Guangzhou. Qilou buildings can adapt to hot and rainy climate, provide shelter from wind and rain, and prevent the sun to create a cool environment.
To get Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, visitors can take subway line 1 and get off at Changshou Road station.
