A total of 100 traditional handicraft techniques in East China's Zhejiang province were recently selected as the ones to receive provincial developmental support, and two of them were from Zhoushan, an island city in the northeast of the province.

The wooden boat making technique of the city's Putuo district is characterized by a distinct marine culture, with the boats featuring fine woodcarving and fisherman's paintings. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

The shell-inlaying craftsmanship of the city's Dinghai district produces mainly decorative furniture. It involves inlaying the shell chips on wood, glass, bamboo or lacquerware to form all kinds of patterns based on folklore, social customs and living scenes.

The 100 handicraft techniques, selected by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology, feature a profound history and sound development prospects, and have the potential to become a local cultural brand.

The move of the province is an answer to the national scheme released last March for the development of traditional Chinese handicrafts.
