Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LNUTCM) grew out of the Liaoning Further Education School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1955) and the Liaoning Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1956). The Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded and recruited its first group of TCM students in 1958. In 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the college changed its name to Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2013 LNUTCM added the new title of "Liaoning Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine".

With over 60 years of development, LNUTCM has formed three campuses: a main campus located in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, and two branch campuses in the seaside city of Dalian and the renowned Chinese Medicine Capital of Benxi. LNUTCM is the only institution of higher learning in Liaoning to train and educate professionals in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Chinese pharmacy, acupuncture and moxibustion, Chinese massage, integration of TCM and western medicine in clinical practice, senior nursing and other medical related disciplines.

LNUTCM has established unique educational characteristics and is strong in cultivating medical talents for international communication, experimental and clinical innovation, and inheritance of TCM. LNUTCM is an authorized National SP Teaching Demonstrating Base and the base for National TCM Practitioner Certification Examinations, Practical Techniques Testing and Examiner Training for the National Physician Qualification Exam (in the category of TCM). It is also the national training base for TCM-specialized English, a Branch Center of National Databases and Retrieval System of TCM Literature, and a base of International TCM Cooperation.

In addition, LNUTCM is the clinical research base for developing key technologies in new TCM medicine authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the national organization for clinical trials of medicine certified by State Food and Drug Administration, the education and examination center of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WFAS) in Liaoning province, and the key institution for the Examination and Assessment Preparatory Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). It is listed in the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China.

LNUTCM has six disciplines, namely Medicine, Science, Engineering, Management, Arts and Law and 19 undergraduate programs with an enrollment of over 10,000 students. There are 17 colleges and schools, four directly affiliated hospitals, one teaching department, two experiment & teaching centers, one animal lab center, three research institutes, two libraries and four museums. LNUTCM has one state-level key discipline, one provincial Double First-rate discipline, three provincial first-class featured disciplines, six provincial disciplines in the project of "Constructing Characteristic Disciplines for Upgrading the Competitiveness of the Institutions of Higher Education", seven provincial key disciplines, 26 state-level key TCM disciplines approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 21 provincial key TCM disciplines, three post-doctoral research centers, three first-class disciplines authorized to grant doctorate degrees, 16 second-class disciplines authorized to grant doctorate degrees, three first-class disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees, 19 second-class disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees, one discipline authorized to grant professional doctorate degrees, and four disciplines authorized to grant professional master's degrees.

LNUTCM has one state-level teaching team and various programs and projects for reform ad talent cultivation. It also prioritizes teaching excellence and innovation, which has led to 32 provincial awards for teaching. It was the editor-in-chief institution for 106 textbooks under the 12th and 13th Five Year Plans in Liaoning Province.

LNUTCM has on staff a member of the Discipline Review Group of the State Department as well as leading scholars from the 973 Plan, the national project of Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents, and others receiving special national government allowances or recognized by the Ministry of Public Health for their outstanding contributions. Its faculty includes national TCM masters, veterans and experts in TCM and individuals honored as national outstanding TCM teachers.

In terms of facilities, LNUTCM has a national and provincial joint engineering lab, a research base for pharmacology, and bases for TCM research. LNUTCM has undertaken 974 research projects, including 114 state-level projects and 407 provincial projects.

LNUTCM was one of the first Chinese universities authorized to recruit international students as well as students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It is the international cooperation base of TCM between China and Central Eastern European countries, and is eligible to take international students with scholarship awarded by the Chinese government, as well as Confucius Institute scholarships and PHD scholarships awarded by Liaoning province. It undertook the first Silk Road Chinese government scholarship project.

LNUTCM has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation with universities, medical institutions and academic organizations in 35 countries and regions such as South Korea, Singapore, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
