Tongling Economic and Technological Development Area is centrally located at the intersection of the Yangtze River Delta and the Wuhan Economic Circle. The development area was set up in July 1992 and upgraded to the national level in April 2011.
Housing over 1,300 enterprises, the development zone has fostered three leading industry clusters covering electronic information materials, advanced manufacturing and, especially, copper-based new materials.
Emerging industries such as new energy vehicles, electronic communication, engineering chemistry have also sprung up in recent years.
In 2016, the area's industrial output totaled 73.2 billion yuan ($10.55 billion) and its fixed-asset investment added up to 20.3 billion yuan. The area also absorbed 13.6 billion yuan worth of external capital, with 22 100-million-yuan projects under construction and 19 in service.
