Jiuhua Mountain, Chizhou

(九华山 jiǔ huá shān)

Covering 120 square kilometers, Jiuhua Mountain is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China, together with Wutai Mountain in Shanxi, Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang and E’mei Mountain in Sichuan. It is located in Qingyang county, Chizhou city, Anhui province.

It boasts 99 Buddhist temples and 11 scenic spots in its area.

Many other scholars, politicians and monks made the journey to Jiuhuashan. As a Chinese saying goes: “A mountain is famous not for its height but for its holiness.”

A temple fair at Jiuhua Mountain is held in summer every. With a history of over 1,000 years, it is regarded as a national intangible cultural heritage.
