Shanhai Pass Scenic Spot is a historical and cultural site 15 kilometers northeast of Qinhuangdao, Hebei province. The pass was established in 1381 during China’s Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), as a defensive part of the Great Wall of China.

The pass was surrounded by tall walls with four main gates to encompass a town. It is 4 kilometers in circumference and 14 meters in height and has a complete defense system.

With the Yanshan Mountain to the north and Bohai Sea to the south, it was an important battleground in ancient times, winning it the reputation of World’s No 1 Pass. In history, the army of Qing entered the central plain after defeating the Ming army at the pass, and set up the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) beginning its rule over China.

Highlights at the scenic spot include the World’s No 1 Pass and Laolongtou or Old Dragon’s Head where the Great Wall meets the sea.
